17th of Tammuz 5786 in Gaithersburg
We're still building our Gaithersburg listings for 17th of Tammuz 5786. The Seventeenth of Tammuz (Shiva Asar B'Tammuz) is a minor fast day commemorating the day the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem in 70 CE, three weeks before the destruction of the Second Temple. It also marks four other historic tragedies: Moses breaking the first set of tablets when he saw the Golden Calf, the cessation of the daily tamid offering in the First Temple, the burning of a Torah scroll by the Roman officer Apostomus, and the placing of an idol in the sanctuary. The fast begins at dawn and ends at nightfall, opening a three-week period of national mourning known as Bein HaMetzarim (the Three Weeks) that culminates with Tisha B'Av. During this period, weddings, live music, haircuts, and other joyous activities are restricted, with stricter mourning customs kicking in during the final Nine Days from Rosh Chodesh Av.
Traditional 17th of Tammuz Foods
Find these classics at Gaithersburg kosher restaurants and caterers.
Pre-Fast Meal (Before Dawn)
Those who wish to eat before the fast should do so before alot hashachar (dawn). A substantial meal with plenty of fluids helps sustain the body through the daytime fast. Many eat oatmeal, eggs, bread, fruit, and drink water and electrolyte beverages.
Break-Fast Foods
After nightfall, fasters break with light, hydrating foods. Common choices are bread, dairy, fruit, fresh juices, and water. Many wait an hour after breaking the fast before eating a full meal to avoid digestive distress.
Tisha B'Av Lead-In Eating
From the 17th of Tammuz onward, communities begin reducing joyous activities. While most kosher restaurants remain open during the Three Weeks, some opt for quieter menus, drop live entertainment, and refrain from launching new dishes. The Nine Days (starting Rosh Chodesh Av) bring additional restrictions including the traditional avoidance of meat and wine for many communities.
