Yom Kippur 2026: Pre-Fast Meals, Break-Fast, and What's Open
Yom Kippur 2026 falls on September 21, with Kol Nidre on Sunday evening, September 20. Here is when kosher restaurants close, how to time the pre-fast meal, and why your break-fast order should go in by Thursday.
Yom Kippur 2026 is observed on September 21, 2026, a Monday, with the fast beginning before sundown on Sunday, September 20 and Kol Nidre that evening. It is a 25-hour total fast, and it reorganizes two full days of kosher food logistics: the structured eating before the fast, and the break-fast after it.
This guide covers the timeline, the closures, and the ordering deadlines that matter.
The Calendar Map
- Sunday, September 20 (Erev Yom Kippur). Eating before the fast is a mitzvah in its own right. Most families eat a festive morning or midday meal, then the seudah hamafseket, the final meal, which must end before candle lighting late that afternoon. Kol Nidre follows at sundown.
- Monday, September 21 (Yom Kippur). The full fast day: no food or drink until nightfall. Neilah closes the day, the shofar sounds, and the fast ends about 45 minutes after sundown.
- Monday night. Break-fast. The most time-sensitive meal of the Jewish year: everyone is hungry at exactly the same moment.
What Closes
- All kosher restaurants close by Sunday afternoon, September 20, most by early afternoon to give staff time to prepare and eat before the fast. Everything stays closed through Monday night.
- Delivery apps will show kosher options dark from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday in most cities. A minority of restaurants reopen Monday night for post-fast crowds; do not count on it without calling.
- Kosher groceries close Sunday afternoon and reopen Tuesday morning, sometimes Monday night in large communities.
The Break-Fast Problem, Solved in Advance
Break-fast is a catering event that sneaks up on people. The classic spread is dairy: bagels, lox and whitefish, cream cheese, kugel, babka, orange juice, strong coffee. Nobody wants to cook after a 25-hour fast, which is why every kosher caterer, bagel shop, and appetizing counter sells break-fast platters, and why they sell out.
Three rules:
- Order by Thursday, September 17. Popular shops close their break-fast lists days before the holiday. The Friday and Sunday pickup slots go first.
- Pick up Sunday morning. Platters are made for this: everything on a break-fast menu holds a day in the refrigerator.
- Check pickup windows. Sunday hours are shortened. A noon pickup you assumed exists may not.
The Pre-Fast Meals
The seudah hamafseket has its own food logic: filling but not thirst-inducing. Traditional menus run to chicken soup with kreplach, simple roast chicken, challah, and rice, and go easy on salt and spice. Restaurants do brisk takeout business Sunday morning for exactly this meal; the same order-early rule applies.

The Rest of the Fall Calendar
Yom Kippur sits in the middle of the fall run: Rosh Hashanah lands September 12-13, and Sukkot begins just five days after the fast, on September 26. Sukkah building and Sukkot grocery runs start almost immediately after break-fast. See the Yom Kippur holiday guide and the full Jewish holidays 2026 calendar to plan the whole month.
Gmar chatimah tovah. May you be sealed for a good year, and may your bagels be waiting when the shofar sounds.
