The Best Kosher Restaurants in Chicago

Skokie, West Rogers Park, and Lincolnwood — a guide to Chicago's underrated kosher dining scene.

Chicago's kosher food scene doesn't get nearly enough attention. While New York and LA dominate the conversation, Chicago has been quietly building one of the most solid kosher dining communities in the country. Centered around West Rogers Park (the Devon Avenue corridor), Skokie, and Lincolnwood, you'll find everything from classic delis and pizza joints to upscale steakhouses and international flavors.

If you live here, you already know. If you're visiting, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

West Rogers Park: Devon Avenue and the Heart of It All

Devon Avenue in West Rogers Park is the main artery of Jewish Chicago. This is where the community gathers, shops, and — most importantly — eats.

Shallots Bistro — This is the fine-dining spot in the neighborhood. White tablecloths, creative plating, and a menu that changes with the seasons. The duck and the sea bass are standouts. Perfect for anniversaries, special occasions, or when you just want to treat yourself. Reservations recommended. Milt's BBQ for the Perplexed — You can't talk about kosher Chicago without talking about Milt's. This barbecue joint has developed a cult following — and it's completely deserved. Slow-smoked brisket, pulled beef, ribs that fall off the bone, and sides that hold their own. The name is a nod to Maimonides, and the food is a nod to the best traditions of American barbecue. If you visit one kosher restaurant in Chicago, make it this one. Ken's Diner — Old-school diner vibes with classic American comfort food. Burgers, hot dogs, fries, milkshakes (well, the meat side doesn't do shakes, but you get the idea). It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, and the food is honest and satisfying. Taboun Grill — Middle Eastern and Mediterranean done right. The taboun bread (baked in a traditional clay oven) is the star here, but the shawarma, kebabs, and hummus are all excellent. Casual atmosphere, generous portions, fair prices. Sushi Grill — A neighborhood go-to for Japanese-style kosher food. Sushi rolls, teriyaki, and noodle dishes. Nothing over-the-top — just reliable, well-prepared food that hits the spot. Tel Aviv Kosher Pizza — A Devon Avenue institution. Classic kosher pizza, falafel, and Israeli-style fast food. The kind of place where you pop in for a quick slice and end up staying for a whole meal.

Skokie: Suburban, But Don't Sleep on It

Skokie has a significant Jewish population and a growing kosher restaurant scene that's worth the drive from the city.

Kol Tuv — Kosher supermarket and prepared foods destination. Their deli counter, bakery, and hot food section make it a one-stop shop for weeknight dinners and Shabbat prep alike. The rotisserie chicken is a community staple. Evita's Cafe — Dairy cafe with a relaxed atmosphere. Good coffee, fresh pastries, sandwiches, and salads. A nice spot for a casual lunch or an afternoon study session. Slurp Ramen — Yes, kosher ramen exists, and it's in Skokie. Rich broth, quality noodles, and creative toppings. It's a smaller menu, but what they do, they do well. A welcome addition to the Chicago kosher scene.

Lincolnwood and Beyond

Romanian Kosher Sausage Company — A legendary deli that's been around since 1970. Romanian-style pastrami, salami, hot dogs, and deli meats that are some of the best in the Midwest. This is old-school, no-frills deli at its absolute finest. If you're a deli person, you need to make the pilgrimage. Chofi's Kosher Catering & Takeout — Great for picking up ready-made meals. Their Shabbat packages are popular with families across the North Shore.

The Bakery Situation

Chicago's kosher bakeries deserve a special mention because they're genuinely excellent.

  • North Shore Bakery in Skokie — challah, rugelach, babka, and custom cakes. A Friday morning essential.
  • Breadsmith (various locations) — artisan breads with kosher certification. Their cranberry walnut loaf is phenomenal.
  • Hungarian Kosher Foods in Skokie — old-world pastries and baked goods. The kind of place your bubbe would approve of.

Chicago-Specific Tips

  • The CRC (Chicago Rabbinical Council) is the primary kosher certifying agency. Most kosher restaurants in the area are under CRC supervision. They maintain an updated restaurant list on their website.
  • Weather planning — Chicago winters are brutal. Many restaurants have limited outdoor seating, and you'll want to plan around the elements from November through March.
  • Devon Avenue parking — street parking can be tight, especially on Sundays. Side streets are your friend.
  • Shabbat timing — winter Shabbat in Chicago starts early (sometimes before 4 PM). Restaurants close accordingly. Summer is more forgiving, with Shabbat starting after 7 or 8 PM.
  • Community feel — Chicago's kosher scene is tight-knit. These restaurants aren't just businesses; they're community gathering spots. Don't be surprised if the owner comes to your table to say hello.
